You scanned the code on the bottle label: welcome! Here is the story behind the name of our extra virgin olive oil, "Gens Curunas", dedicated to an ancient Etruscan family whose funerary complex was found just steps from our farm.
Who the Curunas family was
In the Tuscia area near Viterbo, not far from where our farm stands today, the funerary monument of the gens Curunas was discovered - one of the aristocratic Etruscan families active between the 4th and 2nd century BC. The inscriptions carved on the nenfro and marble sarcophagi found in the family hypogeum record several generations of the gens, testifying to a continuous presence and a prominent role in the local community.
The Curunas family hypogeum has yielded numerous decorated sarcophagi belonging to different members of the gens, laid to rest over several generations. The Etruscan inscriptions and the carved figures on the lids still allow us today to reconstruct part of the family genealogy, offering valuable evidence of the prominent role the Curunas held in ancient Tuscania.
Growing our olive groves just steps away from such an important site for Etruscan history made us feel it was our duty to tell this story. Naming our olive oil "Gens Curunas" is our way of paying tribute to those who, thousands of years ago, inhabited and cared for this very land before us.
From the name to the bottle
Just as the gens Curunas was an integral part of this land in antiquity, our farm continues today to cultivate and care for it, in an ideal thread of continuity between past and present.
"Gens Curunas" is not just a label: it is our way of telling those who buy our oil the story and roots of the place it comes from.
Just as the memory of this Etruscan family has reached us, we want our extra virgin olive oil to be synonymous with quality that lasts and can be handed down.
